Graduate Spotlight: Tanya Monroe
REALTOR® University Class of 2016
How do you think the Master’s program impacts the real estate industry as a whole?
REALTOR® University’s Master’s program provides a broad overview of what is happening in the real estate industry today, the different aspects of real estate, and how emerging trends will impact the future of real estate.
Why did you pick your concentration?
My concentration is Residential Real Estate Sales, Marketing, and Management. I chose this concentration because I have been a Managing Broker for a residential real estate sale brokerage for over 12 years, and I have been in some form of sales management for the last 38 years. My goal in acquiring a MRE was to utilize the knowledge to better impact the success of my agents.
How do you feel the Master’s program will impact your future in a positive way?
Personally, I wanted to further my education. I had started graduate school 38 years ago to obtain a MBA, however, life happened, and I became very busy with a career and family. The timing never seemed right, however, I knew in my heart, I would someday have the opportunity to continue my studies. The perfect time was 3.5 years ago, my two sons were in college, and now my husband and I were empty nesters. I saw an online ad for REALTOR® University’s MRE program, and thought this was “tailored” just for me! A program concentrated on what I focus on a daily basis. With my husband’s support and encouragement it was time to make it happen. Achieving this level of education has impacted me in such a positive way; I have the additional knowledge and confidence to inspire others. I have definitely enhanced my leadership ability, and impact a greater number of agents/people.
Tell us a bit about yourself:
I simply have a zest for life! I have truly been fortunate to have such a supportive spouse. We have been married for 38 years. My real estate family/office brings me a lot of joy! I love coaching and mentoring others and truly believe real estate is a profession not a hobby, and education is a huge part of this. In addition, I believe in giving back/being involved in my local and state association. I currently serve on my state association’s board of directors.
What or who encouraged you to enroll in the program?
My husband and our sons.
What did you find the most challenging about the program?
For me the most challenging part was getting started after being out of college for over 38 years, and completing coursework on the computer/online. After this I would say the Capstone Project, because I was challenged to demonstrate a culmination of what I had learned.
Earning a Master’s degree and working full time is demanding. What helped you survive those moments?
Having encouraging and supportive professors made all the difference! They were always there to assist. In addition, my husband offered to take care of the household needs, so I could focus on late nights and weekends of doing nothing but homework.
What would you tell prospective students about the program?
I would recommend that prospective students take a serious look at this program. My conversations with student advisers provided great insight and guidance on how to complete paperwork. Having a MRE definitely distinguishes your from your peers, and impacts you professionally.
